Experience Fort Whoop-Up

Fort Whoop-Up is a replica of an original fur trading fort built in the late 1800s. We tell the story of the buffalo robe and illegal whisky trade, the years leading up to and the years that followed. It is a complex story that includes the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), other First Nations, Métis, Canadians, Americans, and British. Experience the Fort like never before with exclusive group tours and packages. These experiences are perfect for larger groups who want to experience the rich history presented at the fort.


Life on the Whoop-Up Trail Package

History comes alive at Fort Whoop-Up this summer, and guests are invited to step back in time and experience a taste of Life on the Whoop-Up Trail. Enjoy an evening of entertainment, and hear intriguing stories about the Blackfoot, Métis, Canadians and American Whisky traders in the late 1800s. Feast fort style on a pioneer dinner highlighting locally-sourced foods. Break bread with the locals and new-found friends from around the world.

Includes a performance by New West Theatre actors, a guided tour by a costumed interpreter, a pioneer dinner of beef stew or bison chili, pan bannock, coffee or mint tea, one beer/wine or non-alcoholic drink with additional beverages available for sale. Experience what it would be like at night sitting around the fire listening to tales told by a fort trader. Enjoy making and roasting bannock on a stick topped with saskatoon berry jam while the stories are being told. Experience includes a gift shop discount of 10%.

This experience is available on Wednesdays in July and August, 2019 and 2020 from 6–9 pm. Available on alternate dates in July/August 2019 as a customized group tour program based on availability.


Bad Guys, Bannock and Buffalo Package

Experience first-hand the life and culture at a trading fort in southern Alberta. Hear stories of the region and its people from the mid-1860s to the early 1890s, including a few notorious characters along the way. Get hands-on with immersive activity options that include learning how to chink and daub the fort, making bannock over a fire, or taking on the role of a trader and learn the art of selling buffalo robes.

Includes a guided tour by a costumed interpreter, sampling pan bannock served with saskatoon berry jam, mint tea or coffee, photo opportunities throughout the fort, a gift shop discount of 10% and your choice of up to 2 of the following hands-on group activities to learn

  • how to chink and daub the fort

  • the art of trading hides in the fort’s trade room

  • how to make bannock on a stick over a fire

Available as a customized group tour program from early May to early September. Customizable add-ons include:

  • a pioneer meal of beef stew or bison chili ($10 per person) or a bison burger ($12 per person); pop or water; and bannock or a bag of chips

  • a 30-minute horse-drawn wagon ride of the scenic river valley for a $60 flat group rate.

Explore Fort Whoop-Up and discover the rich Indigenous history and culture of the Blackfoot people in the 1800s. Sample authentic cuisine and learn from a Blackfoot interpreter about traditions that have been passed down through generations. Sit atop Pendleton fabric and listen to Blackfoot stories told by a local knowledge keeper. A sweetgrass braid is yours to take home.

Includes a guided tour with a Blackfoot interpreter, sampling mint tea and berry soup and listening to stories from a local Blackfoot knowledge keeper in the fort’s village, in the tipi or in the Blackfoot gallery. The experience includes a gift shop discount of 10%.
